A Thoughtfully Renovated Character Home
Project Overview
Wright Brothers Building Ltd was engaged to undertake a comprehensive renovation of a character cottage on Renall Street, Masterton. The objective was to modernise the home while preserving its original charm and heritage features. The project involved significant upgrades to the kitchen, living areas, bedrooms, and bathroom, transforming an ageing property into a warm and functional family home.
Obstacles Solved
A unique aspect of the project was that no architect or draughtsperson was engaged to redesign the home. Instead, the new layout and design solutions were developed collaboratively between the builder and the client. This required careful planning and practical problem-solving to maximise functionality while retaining the character of the cottage.
A significant challenge was the removal of the original coal range and brick chimney structure. More than 1,000 bricks were manually removed from inside the home, along with the cast-iron coal range itself, which required a six-person team to safely dismantle and remove due to its weight and restricted access.
The project also required close coordination between multiple trades to ensure all aspects of the renovation were completed efficiently and to a high standard while maintaining the home’s character features.
Solution Delivered
The renovation included a complete redesign of the internal living spaces, creating a new open-plan kitchen and living area, a walk-in wardrobe, and a new bathroom featuring a tiled walk-in shower and freestanding bath. Extensive interior modernisation was carried out throughout the home while preserving its original character and charm.

The completed renovation transformed a dated cottage into a modern and highly functional family home while retaining the features that made the property unique.
